Even though our family is relatively "granola" most of the time, I figured today would be a good day to work on educating the boys a bit more about how we can do our part to keep the Earth a healthy and happy place to live. Here are some of the things that are pretty easily understood by kids which we will talk about:
- How can we save more water? Currently, we already do not leave water running while doing dishes or brushing our teeth. But we can do more! Having the boys bathe or shower together saves water. And only washing laundry or running the dishwasher when we have a full load also saves water.
- How can we create less garbage? Currently, we recycle and have a compost. We can also buy products that use minimal packaging. For instance, buying a frozen concentrated juice and then creating our own, saves on packaging compared to individual use sized juice boxes. Less packaging equals less garbage.
- How can we use less energy? Currently, we are using compact flourescent bulbs and have our thermostats on a program. However, we can do other things to reduce our energy usage. For example, we can use the clothesline to dry our clothes instead of the dryer. We can also close the drapes at night to help keep the cold air out which thereby reduces our heat usage. We can also use our grill more frequently in lieu of the electric oven/gas cooktop. Another big one that we really need to work on is turning things off when they are not being used. The boys have a bad habit of turning on a tv or a video game and then leaving it on when they leave the room.
- Other things we are doing: planting a vegetable garden, using a barrel to collect rain water which can then be used to water the garden on dry days, walk the neighborhood to pick up litter and dispose of it, use our tote bags in lieu of plastic shopping bags (we need to do this more often - I forget to grab them), walk to the store for small shopping trips, and carpool to the gym with a friend.
So what are you doing this Earth Day?
